The Different Types of Construction Equipment That’s Used Today

Did you know that over 7 million people work in construction? With so many workers, it’s no surprise that there’s a wide variety of construction equipment that’s regularly used across the industry.

So what are the different types of construction equipment out there? What should you know when looking at equipment for a construction site?

That’s what we’re here to look at today. Read on to find out more about the different types of equipment that a construction firm looks for.

Bulldozers

This first type of construction equipment might be one of the most recognizable out there. Bulldozers are powerful tractors that push rubble, debris, rocks, and anything else that needs to be moved on a given construction site.

A dozer blade is mounted on these vehicles to push things around. Bulldozers, are you might imagine, are incredibly useful for large construction sites with a lot of moving parts.

Asphalt Pavers

Another common piece of heavy construction equipment is the asphalt paver. These might be found on large construction sites or even in your parking lot or local road when asphalt needs to be paved.

Ashpalt is loaded onto the paver’s hopper from a dump truck. A converter then helps lay the asphalt down to the ground as it spreads across the surface.

Dump Trucks

Another common vehicle on construction sites is this large commercial vehicle. Dump trucks are often used for moving large amounts of sand, gravel, or debris from one site to another.

Unlike bulldozers, dump trucks have an open-box bed on top of it that also has hydraulics set up to “dump” whatever it’s carrying onto a surface. Its incredible carrying capacity is what makes dump trucks so valuable.

Trenchers

Construction Site Safety Tips

If you need to dig trenches for installing electrical cables or for putting pipes down, you need trenchers. There are different types of trenchers, some of which are installed onto vehicles and others that are walk-behind models.

There are even lightweight trenchers that weigh less than 300-pounds. Others are specialized to cut through surfaces that are harder than soil or dirt. Micro trenchers, for example, are designed specifically for urban use.

Locators

Something that often gets overlooked when discussing the different types of construction equipment are the smaller gadgets that help run your operation. Locators are one such gadgets that are incredibly important.

Underground locators help identify things like cables, septic systems, gas mains, and other objects beneath the ground before excavation begins. They’re crucial in making sure that accidents don’t occur.

Many locators use sophisticated transmitters to make sure everyone is aware of what’s under the ground. If you want to know more about where you can get these transmitters, click on the link for more info.
